Flu Vaccine.....

I was really torn about getting the flu vaccine for the kids. I am not sure if it does more harm than good. I obviously want to do what is best for my children and with this whole H1N1 scare, I decided to get them the seasonal flu vaccine so that when the H1N1 vaccine comes out I could get that for them as well. NOW I am thinking otherwise...my kids are healthy and statistically, the likelihood of them getting it and something serious happening to them is pretty slim. Sometimes I feel like they are scaring us into getting things that aren't necessary. What are your thoughts on getting the flu vaccine???
Ethan got the flu mist vaccine and 2 days later had a mild flu and this wonderful rash....I took him to the doctor and indeed they think it is a reaction to the flumist. No shit?!! The doctor asked me about a million times if I was sure that he isn't allergic to eggs. I felt like saying "Do you think I am a moron sir? My son is 6 years old and has been eating eggs for a good portion of those years, don't you think I would have come in/ have it written in his records if he EVER had an allergic reaction"! It is obviously a reaction to something else in the vaccine. They gave him benedryl for the hives, but it did nothing for them. He doesn't itch at all so we just have to wait it out and hope that is doesn't get worse. It spread a bit more, but today it is starting to get a bit lighter.

On top of Ethan being sick, Lainey had a major spill yesterday. She was up on Ethan's bookshelf and fell. I know you are all thinking "why was she on the bookshelf"? Well, Lainey is CONSTANTLY climbing on things..if she is not on the bookshelf, she is on something else. We try to keep her down, but if we removed her all the time we would get nothing done. Andy was in the room and stepped away for a second to help Ethan and boom, she fell. She bit her tongue really bad. When I say bad, I am talking about a huge laceration. Her top 4 teeth went halfway through her tongue. With tongue wounds they don't give stitches unless you bite the tongue all the way off (that is a nice mental image eh?!). Luckily she didn't do that and tongues heal really fast. It is already starting to look a little better. After the initial fall Lainey hasn't cried about it once. It doesn't seem to bother her and she is eating, drinking and talking normally. Thank goodness! I will spare you all the pic of her tongue, its pretty gnarly. Needless to say, it's been pretty eventful around here! Both kids are on the mend and hopefully the next few weeks/months(years would be nice!) will be accident/sickness free :).

poor babies. when it rains, it pours, huh? when i was at primary's this week with quinn, i asked the nurses what they thought of the whole H1N1 scare and if they had seen any cases and they all told me it was a load of crap. they said that they had not seen one case so far. as far as the seasonal flu though, i am all for the vaccine. the "flu" that you could get as a reaction to the vaccine is NOTHING compared to the flu for that season. are you sure ethan isnt allergic to eggs :)

I too am in the same predicament with these stupid flu/H1N1 vaccines. The one time that I did get the regular flu vaccination I got sick anyway. I think it was shorter than the regular flu, but it still wasn't fun. I talked to a friend of ours in the health care industry who said that they basically try to "guess" the spring before what strain of the virus will be most predominant in the fall and sometimes they're wrong, or of course sometimes you end up catching a different strain of it.

My baby doc highly recommended Bart and I get both shots, but we're very hesitant as well since we're both healthy and will be keeping indoors for most of this winter season. But, since he is a student surrounded by germy college kids, we keep going back and forth.....As if we didn't have enough worries as first time parents!!! :O

Good news is that Benjamin is asleep right now in his big boy crib. That's right- not his pack n play, not his swing, not his bouncer, and not my arm!!!
Ahhh- it's the little things, right? Well, hope both Ethan and Lainey get better soon and just remember that you'll all be living in HAWAII SOON!!!!!! :)

my version of ALL the vaccines today.....they seem to have several more than when you and jace were little, yet somehow you two grew up with very little sickness. you did have the chicken pox (no vaccine for that then) but otherwise, you NEVER had flu shots or mist, because they were only given to the elderly....and no one in our family ever had the flu. hmmmm. and i worked for doctors for 15 years, and still never got sick from work...well, maybe strept throat once after swabbing throats in pediatrics daily!but then, we boomers all drank from garden hoses when we were little!!

...one more thing...ethan's rash DOES remind me of jayson's "erythema multiforme" that he got when he was about 3!

Seriously?! Could you have a little more action?! Good thing Lainey bug is a tough cookie!! Glad she is moving about like normal. Poor Ebear...that rash looks super annoying. I'm glad it doesn't itch him though! I don't have much to say about the flu shot.. I got the flu shot today actually, but I didnt get one last year. And about the kiddies getting them...I have no effin idea!! lol

Oh my gosh Annie - what a week! I hope Ethan's hives have cleared up some - they looked pretty nasty. Are you sure he's not allergic to eggs? :-) Just remember, you'll be back to regular doctors soon enough!

Poor Lainey - I feel for you. Zachary always has been a climber and there's nothing you can do. Glad she doesn't seem to be too bothered by it.
